Forage testing is the foundation of ration building therefore the results obtained must be accurate. Hay is a highly variable plant material that changes with field conditions during the growth and harvesting periods. It also has variations in the leaf-stem ratio, as well as the amount of legume/grass mix within a lot. SGS provides sampling and testing services for all of your hay and forage needs.
Taking a proper and representative sample is the most important factor in correct forage analysis. While laboratory analysis can determine the quality of a submitted sample, if the submitted sample does not represent fully the quality of an entire lot, a correct analysis cannot be determined.
Forage analysis typically consists of Crude Protein (CP), Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF), Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), Calcium (Ca), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) and Magnesium (Mg). Other elements such as Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Zinc (Zn) and Copper (Cu) are also useful in determining the final ration.
