End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Regulations

SGS tests whole vehicles and components to ensure compliance with international end-of-life vehicles (ELV) directives. These include the European Union’s 2000/53/EC as well as those relevant to China, Japan and Korea.

The directives encourage whole vehicle and component manufacturers to design products with re-use and recycling in mind. The legislation also restricts the use of specific substances including lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium (VI) and – in certain cases – also bromated flame retardants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and polybrominated biphenyl (PBB).

Using the latest technologies, we conduct end-of-life tests that are sensitive enough to detect even trace amounts of these substances. And thanks to our worldwide network and standardized testing procedures, we are able to perform these services at any location and at every stage of production.

We also offer chemical analytics and compliance consulting. For example, we are able to test for those substances included on the Global Automotive Declarable Substances List (GADSL) and add another level of safety to your processes. In addition, we can help you manage substances of very high concern (SVHC), in compliance with the European Union’s Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulations.
