Low Voltage Directive

Electrical goods sold, or manufactured for use within the EU must meet the Low Voltage Directive. To operate in this market you must demonstrate your products’ safety through compliance with both this and the EMC Directive.

It covers all potential health and safety risks associated with electrical current:

• In everyday use
• The potential hazard caused by appliances
• The protection of appliances from external hazards

A product must fulfill the requirements to be compliant. In the event case of dispute, a statement must be provided by a Notified Body, such as SGS, on how the product’s conformity has been verified.

As a Notified Body we offer manufacturers a range of services related to the Low Voltage Directive:

• Establishment of requirements, directives and standards
• Testing and inspections
• Help with producing the technical construction file(s)
• Verification of technical construction files
• Declaration of conformity

This directive applies to electrical equipment with an operating voltage of 75V-1500V DC and 50V-1000V AC, but is not valid for certain electrical equipment covered by other directives. Such products include electromedical equipment and electrical appliances and instruments used in premises where there is an explosion hazard.
