Analysis of Reformed Gas
Reformed gas is a lower-thermal-value fuel gas made by pyrolysis and steam decomposition of high-thermal-value natural and refinery gases. SGS’s analysis of reformed gas provides valuable information on the chemical composition of such gas.
The reforming process offers environmental and value-added benefits made possible by the removal of CO and the simultaneous capture of high-purity hydrogen. This leads to an increase in fuel efficiency and limits performance deterioration.
SGS follows the American Society for Testing and Materials standard, ASTM D1946-90(2006), for the determination of the chemical composition of reformed gases and similar gaseous mixtures containing hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, ethane and ethylene.
At SGS, we use gas chromatography to physically separate the various gaseous components in the sample. We compare these to reference standards separated under identical operating conditions and a reference standard mixture of known composition. The composition of the reformed gas is calculated by comparing either the peak height of each component with the corresponding value of that component in the reference standard.
