Earlier this month, SGS issued its first ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certificates to U.S.-based companies producing sustainable biomass.

Since January 2011, companies wishing to export biofuels into Germany and other European Union countries must provide evidence of Sustainable Origin of the Commodities they supply in accordance with the E.U Renewable Energy Directive.  ISCC certification is one route to ensuring full compliance with the laws established from this directive.  The market demand for sustainable biofuel continues to grow, and companies throughout the E.U. are even paying a premium for certified biomass.

SGS is the dominant market leader in ISCC certification, having issued more than 50% of the ISCC certificates currently held around the globe.
SGS North America has ISCC approved auditors located throughout the United States and Canada. These auditors possess technical expertise in the ISCC system and a thorough understanding of the industry.

SGS Germany GmbH was the first Certification Body approved for sustainability certification according to German Sustainability ordinances by the German Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE). SGS played a decisive role in the development process of the ISCC system. Workshops and pilot audits in important production countries, including Brazil, and preliminary inspections in, for example, Malaysia, formed the basis for the ISCC system rules.

In order to meet requirements of EU Directive 2009/28/EC, all stages of production of biofuel and bioliquids can be certified in by applying the ISCC System. Therefore, the following chains of custody and production cycles can be certified to conform to the Renewable Energy Directive Requirements (RED).

  • Farm - producer of raw material
  • Warehouse (Collecting Point)
  • First Gathering Point (FGP)
  • Warehouse after FGP
  • Trader
  •  Oil extracting plant
  •  Conversion unit
  •  Supplier of biofuel/bioliquids
