Antibiotic Residue Testing
ENSURING QUALITY FEED THROUGH ANTIBIOTIC RESIDUE TESTING
Brookings, SD – Even at low levels, some contaminants like antibiotics can be harmful to animals and humans. To ensure that feed products are fit for consumption, regular quality assurance checks are necessary to test for these contaminants.
In feed manufacturing, carryover of specific antibiotics is possible between batches of different products. Feed manufacturers must follow strict maximum residue limit (MRL) guidelines to assure safe feed products. Antibiotics have different MRLs depending on what animal specie will consume the feed and where it is shipped and received.
Only comprehensive contaminant testing will determine the presence and level of antibiotics and other specific contaminants. After finding such impurities, you may be able to rework the product to acceptable levels or eliminate the relevant goods from the production and distribution chain.
SGS uses the latest antibiotic testing methods and cutting edge technology, including LC/MS/MS (liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry) which is highly specific. Standards produced from reference materials allow quantification and identification of the specific antibiotics. In addition, SGS has been selected by a major university for studies involving antibiotic residues in feed using these LC/MS/MS capabilities.
