Olive Oil Testing
Over the past several years there has been an increase in the adulteration of food grade oils, and many olive oils sold as “extra virgin” are not meeting the rigid standards set forth by the International Olive Council (IOC) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA.)
Specializing in the testing of these food grade oils, our ISO 9001 accredited Agricultural Laboratory in St. Rose, Louisiana, provides fast, accurate and reliable results for a complete range of testing services and methods.
One example of olive oil adulteration occurred in an oil that was represented as 90 percent canola oil and 10 percent extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). While there is currently no way to substantiate that a given blended oil contains EVOO as opposed to pure olive oil, tests can show that the oil contained no canola oil. After testing, a normalized chromatography graph is created to show the percentage of phytosterols, which are a significant part of the unsaponifiable matter in vegetable oil.
The typical percentage of campesterol for canola oil is between 5-13 percent. The oil that was tested had less than ½ percent, clearly showing the blended oil contained little or no canola oil. Using this normalized graph and a normalized graph of the fatty acid composition, a test in which the triglycerides are converted into methlyated fatty acids, the two tests together confirmed that the blended oil contained soybean oil rather than canola oil.
Our trained scientists and technicians test and authenticate samples based on specifications set forth by various governing bodies, including IOC and AOCS (American Oil Chemists’ Society). When oils do not meet these standards, SGS’s technical expertise can assist our clients in becoming educated on the oil and thus save them from a potential claim or embarrassment. Backed by the SGS global network, our New Orleans facility offers specialized services in addition to those typically required for the Oils and Grains industries.
