Brookings, SD — SGS now offers bovine pregnancy testing and bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus detection in addition to the comprehensive SGS testing profile.  The bovine pregnancy test offers exceptional accuracy and early detection with 99.3% sensitivity and up to 95.1% specificity at just 28 days after breeding. With a negative or open result, there is a 99% certainty that the cow is open. A cow is identified as negative as soon as 60 days post-calving without interference from the previous pregnancy.  This testing platform accurately detects pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) in serum or EDTA plasma as early as 28 days after breeding to allow for more frequent testing and improved reproductive performance.

The IDEXX BVDV Antigen Test even detects PI (Persistently Infected) status in very young calves and is the only USDA-licensed ELISA test for BVDV. The BVDV virus is highly infective and can cause significant economic losses to producers and feed yard managers. With the IDEXX testing platform used by SGS, a simple ear notch or blood sample can tell whether a calf is persistently infected with BVDV.

“Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is the one of the most costly viral disease in cattle, inhibiting conception, causing abortion and birth defects, and hindering the immune system”, says SGS Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor, Sonja Van Holland, MT (ASCP).  “An infected newborn calf that may appear healthy can be infected with the virus for its entire life. This is considered a persistently infected (PI) animal. This animal can spread the virus to all the other cattle it comes in contact with.  That is why it is imperative that producers and feed yards test every animal for BVDV-PI.”
