Brookings, SD – The growing season is quickly approaching and knowledge of soil nutrient composition and pesticide residue levels can assist producers in understanding the readiness of their fields for crop growth.  The crop season last year, with some fields producing poor yields due to the drought, may have left behind more nutrients than other growing seasons which could allow a producer to save money in this upcoming season by applying less fertilizer.  However, if a field was cut for silage, removing more of the plant than is typically removed when harvesting grain, less nutrients may have been left in the field and more fertilizer would be needed to optimize yield this season.  SGS can provide soil testing to help you determine the needs for your field.  SGS can also provide plant analysis and pesticide residue testing.  The SGS laboratory prides itself on fast turnaround time for results, even during the busy season.

SGS Brookings soil and plant analysis testing can include the major nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, minor nutrients such as calcium and sulfur, and micronutrients such as copper, iron, manganese, and zinc.  Soil tests are also available for pH, soil salinity, CEC, organic matter, and more.  SGS pesticide residue testing is available for soil and plant tissue and we offer testing for a large number of herbicides that may be used in the field.

SGS Brookings has other services to provide value to producers and agronomic managers.  We offer site specific downloads to provide you with field specific fertility maps, and order ahead services are available to allow for quick and easy sample labeling and submission to our laboratory during your busy season.  The SGS Brookings laboratory can also assist with agricultural research projects performing specialized procedures and creating individualized testing protocols for projects like field trials and breeding studies.
