Olive Oil Testing and Nutritional Labeling
Many olive oils sold as “extra virgin” are not meeting the rigid standards set forth by the International Olive Council (IOC) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). SGS has the capability to test your food grade oils for authenticity and quality.
Specializing in the testing of food grade oils, our ISO 9001 accredited agricultural laboratory in St. Rose, Louisiana, provides fast, accurate and reliable results for a complete range of testing services and methods. Our trained scientists and technicians test and authenticate samples based on specifications set forth by various governing bodies, including IOC, USDA, and AOCS (American Oil Chemists’ Society). When oils do not meet these standards, SGS’s technical expertise can assist our clients in becoming educated on the oil and better manage their risk.
In a study with 52 labeled extra virgin olive oils (EVOO) that were purchased in California retail stores, 69% of the imported oils and 10% of the oils from California did not meet the USDA standard for extra virgin olive oil. Eleven oils failed USDA / IOC chemical tests.
SGS has trained scientists who are able to test for purity including looking for refined oil or non-olive oils in the sample. Quality assurance programs to monitor and guard against adulteration may need to be established to focus on purity, and analytical tests can determine grade and quality of the olive oil.
Backed by the SGS global network, our St. Rose facility offers specialized services in addition to those typically required for the Oils and Grains industry.
Whatever the industry or market, anywhere in the world, SGS is your trusted source for testing requirements. We work with you to develop innovative services and technologies customized to your needs. We enhance quality, ensure compliance and reduce risk, helping you invest time and effort where it benefits your business most.
