SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, today announced it is the first company to receive National Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) status from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for its product safety testing laboratories in mainland China. This will strengthen the technical alignment between the company's China and U.S.-based facilities and provide electrical and electronics manufacturers a shorter time-to-market.

OSHA created the NRTL program to ensure that certain types of electrical equipment be tested and certified for their safe use in the workplace.  OSHA’s NRTL regulations were established in 1988, and SGS (formally United States Testing Company) became a NRTL in 1992.  A Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) is a private-sector organization that OSHA has recognized as meeting the legal requirements in 29 CFR 1910.7 to perform testing and certification of products using consensus-based test standards.

The five new SGS China sites in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, and Shunde, join the U.S. facility in Suwanee, Georgia as Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories. SGS North America will continue to lead the NRTL program for the SGS global network.

Additionally, OSHA has expanded the recognized testing standards covering the following product categories: Power Tools, Lighting, Household appliances, and Audio Visual / Information Technology products.

Our continued expansion in Product Safety complements SGS capabilities in Wireless and Environmental Compliance Testing Services such as RoHS/ REACH, which strengthens our solutions for manufacturers and retailers," said Paul Krauss, Certification Manager, SGS North America.
