SGS Accredited for Bacteria Filtration Efficiency Testing of Medical Face Masks

SGS is pleased to announce that our IBR Laboratories have had their ISO/IEC 17025 certification expanded to include ASTM F2101 – Standard Test Method for Evaluating the Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) of Medical Face Mask Materials, Using a Biological Aerosol of Staphylococcus aureus.

This addition to our certification scope comes at a significant time as the health and safety of those wearing medical face masks becomes even more important.

What is ASTM F2101?

ASTM F2101 tests the filtration efficiency of medical face mask materials. It is a core test method included in ASTM F2100 – Standard Specification for Performance of Materials Used in Medical Face Masks.

Filtration efficiency is determined by analyzing the upstream bacterial challenge in relation to downstream residual concentration. This establishes a material’s BFE, a key requirement for face masks used in surgical and patient care settings.  

ASTM F2101 is also cited as a voluntary requirement in another ASTM, F3502 – Standard Specification for Barrier Face Coverings.

Certification to conduct ASTM F2101 testing by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) follows a four-month development process at SGS’s testing facility in Grass Lake, Michigan.
