SGS has launched a new service to support Amazon vendors looking to use the global retailer’s latest self-certification scheme for packaging.

SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has launched a new service to support Amazon vendors who wish to take advantage of the global retailer’s latest self-certification program for packaging and its financial incentives for improved package design.

Amazon’s Frustration Free Packaging (FFP) certification standards require that all packaging must be easy to open, designed to be recycled and able to protect products from damage throughout the supply chain without the need for additional packaging or preparation by Amazon. A recent expansion of the program, to allow self-certification of packaging for non-fragile products less than 50 lbs allows vendors to self-test their packages instead of using a third party.

How can SGS support vendors?

SGS North America has developed a new service which encompasses package preparation, drop testing and reporting. The company is certified by ISTA (the International Safe Transit Association) and an Amazon APASS lab with full ISTA 6 Amazon.com capabilities. Specialist teams will:

  • Conduct the self-test and certify the packaging on behalf of the vendors
  • Help evaluate packaging designs to secure Amazon’s financial incentives

John O’Connell, Global Packaging Director, SGS said: “We welcome Amazon’s ambition to reduce waste, reduce costs and improve customer satisfaction through its packaging standards. Whilst the new self-certification program is an excellent resource for vendors, we recognize the challenge for many organizations in its effective implementation. We designed our new service to lift the burden on manufacturers and retailers to gain self-certification and reduce their organizational risk and costs.”

Benefits for vendors include:

  • Time and labor savings with cost efficient option of having SGS conduct the self-test
  • Use of experienced staff and bespoke equipment
  • Gaining feedback on package design
  • Quick and accurate testing of one or multiple Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASINs)
  • Options for related services (transit testing, packaging & materials testing)

Between October 1, 2021, and December 31, 2022, users of the new self-certification scheme will be able to take advantage of Amazon’s financial incentives for improved package design.
